Here you can find information on who we are, what we do and what we believe. As a Church we believe in a living God who sent his only Son Jesus Christ to transform our lives. This message is just as relevant now as it has ever been.

We enjoy open worship and bible based teaching, for us, church is not just a coming together of believers but a family. We also get together in the week in small groups where we enjoy close support and friendship.

You are welcome every Sunday at 10.30am

Terry Watson felt led by God to lay down the leadership which moved to Gary Hayes and Philip Watson. After Gary Hayes and his family moved to the North of England Philip took on the leadership. Through his leadership we moved as a church to a plurality of elders, instigating a prayer ministry team, a developed teaching ministry and a greater move towards a mission focused church.

In the 5 years since 2000 we saw God prepare the church for our next stage. God had added to the church people whose hearts where to serve the local community and to see those around the church come to know the love of Jesus.

In 2005 Philip and his family moved to Australia, the church prayed and fasted regarding the new leadership and in February 2006 John Watson was recognised as the new church leader.

Where we are heading…

Church should not be a group of people that simply get together each Sunday. Church is really a community of believers that support and care for one another. The early church devoted themselves to each other, supporting each other practically, emotionally and spiritually.

At EGCC we encourage all our church members to go to a small group, some meet in homes or the church building, in the evening or the afternoon. This is a time to get to know each other in a deeper way, studying the bible together, eating together and just being a community together.

If you would like to come to one of our small groups, let us know by leaving a message on 020 8850 1331, or using the contact form below:

“Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you: and behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the world.”

The words of Jesus : Matthew 28 v 19-20

Our vision is to make known the good news of Jesus to this generation, starting in Eltham and to the ends of the earth through our missionaries.

Our vision is to teach the bible in a relevant way, bringing life change and therefore doing the things that Jesus commands us to do as taught in the bible.

Our vision is to develop our relationship with God through worship, service and loving one another. To develop a community of believers who support, care and teach one another.

To do this we recognise the deep need of Jesus Christ, His sacrifice on the cross for our sins, His resurrection power and His grace by which we have been given new life, with new power to live peaceful, exciting lives.

Through this vision we can meet the needs of the people.

The church leadership consists of 5 Elders, Elders are responsible for the church and the people in it, they oversee the church and direct the church according to the leading of the Holy Spirit. Although one Elder has the leadership calling and whose role is to cast the vision of the church, the direction is not uniquely found in the Elders, we believe that each member of the church has a part to play in where we go as a church, we encourage the church to seek God for what He wants for their life.

We also have Trustees who are responsible for the operation of Eltham Green Fellowship Trust, they look after the financies, our policies and are legally responsible for the Church.

Deacons are people who are responsible for the practical side of church life, making sure things are running effectively and caring for the needy.

Outside of these roles, there are many others who lead and work in other activities without these people the church could not run effectively.

Eltham Green Christian Centre was initially established as Eltham Green Christian Fellowship in 1975 in the home of Terry and Frances Watson. The church grew rapidly. By the end of 1977 the Fellowship had to move along the road to number 1, the home of Alan and Betty Stewart, in order to provide more space for the growing meetings.

The work continued to grow and it became clearer that a much larger building would be needed, and with this in mind we contacted Eltham Green Methodist Church with a view to sharing their building.

Although a meeting with them in June 1978 was positive, there were legal complications that prevented us sharing their premises. Meanwhile, the meeting at number 1 had grown to numbers in excess of 120 people and neighbours were unhappy. Eventually, the council served an order forbidding use of number 1 and number 4 as a church.

Late in 1979 the church secured the use of the Church of the Holy Family at Avery Hill, which was a Church of England property not used for services.

Conditions were not ideal, the building being in a different area, having very poor heating and also being used by a variety of groups. The congregation continued to seek the Lord for their own premises in Eltham. In our praying there was always the sense that the Eltham Green Methodist Church was the building that the Lord would one day provide.

Eventually in December 1981, this building came up for sale at a price of £50,000. The church immediately made an offer, as did a number of other interested parties, including a notable and rich Muslim who had recently sold a racehorse for several million pounds! Faith needed to be increased and the church established a day of fasting and prayer. It was not long before other bids were withdrawn and we had secured the building for £32,500.

The church congregation moved in during May 1982 and since then much time has been spent on improving the building, which was in quite a poor condition. In [1990] a two-storey extension was been built in order to provide accommodation for a family and some single folk together with additional rooms for the children’s work.

Since 2000….

The Bible: We believe the Bible to be the only inspired, infallible, authoritative Word of God, inerrant in its original manuscripts. The Bible has all authority over life and faith.

Trinitarian God: We believe that there is one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Jesus Christ: We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, His bodily resurrection, His ascension to the right hand of the Father and His personal return in power and glory.

Holy Spirit: We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling and empowering the Christian is enabled to live a life of godliness and effective service.

Mankind: We believe that God created man in His own image, morally free and responsible to choose between good and evil. However, man has sinned and has fallen short of God’s intended purpose.

Salvation: Christ offered once and for all the perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world. Salvation is found in His name alone. We believe that for the salvation of the lost and sinful man, repentance and faith in Jesus Christ and the regeneration by the Holy Spirit are absolutely essential.

Baptism of the Holy Spirit: Given at Pentecost, it is the promise of the Father, sent by Jesus after His ascension, to empower the church to preach the gospel throughout the whole earth and to live holy lives.

Sanctification: We believe that God, in His great love, has called us through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to be saved from the power of sin and to live our lives for Him in holiness and effective service. We believe that, through the Cross of Christ, we can be freed from sin’s control and from selfish desires. We can enter into a living, vibrant relationship with Christ who then fills us with the Holy Spirit and works Christ’s character into us and reveals it through us. This experience, which we call sanctification, is initiated by an act of faith and full surrender to God and is not the result of human effort, self-initiated works, and acts of willpower or modified behaviour. It continues as a process in which we mature in grace, truth, love, understanding and power.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit - The Holy Spirit is manifested in the life of all believers through a variety of spiritual gifts to build-up and sanctify the church. All believers are commanded to earnestly desire the manifestation of these gifts in their lives and it is the Holy Spirit that determines the distribution of these gifts in the Body.
These gifts always operate in harmony with the Scriptures and should never be used in violation of biblical parameters.

The Church
: We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ. Every person who is born of the Spirit is an integral part of the Church as a member of the body of Jesus Christ.

The Sacraments: Water baptism and the Lord’s Supper are the sacraments of the church commanded by Christ. They are means of grace through faith, and by them, God works in us to strengthen and confirm our faith

Water Baptism. We believe that water baptism is the biblical testimony of the professed believer in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The Lord’s Supper. We believe that those who partake of the Lord’s Supper should be born-again believers, walking in fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Although the bread and the wine are not literally the body and blood of Christ, we believe that Christ is present as the sacrament is given and taken in a spiritual manner.

Resurrection: We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life in heaven and they that are lost unto the resurrection of eternal torment with the devil and the fallen angels in hell.
